Nemo’s Garden

“Nemo’s Garden” consists of domes on the sea bed, under which certain plants grow almost as well as on land. Basil is even supposed to have a more intense flavour, although gardeners will need to dive down with an oxygen tank to get to their plants.

Hydro­ponIcs

60 plants grow in 10m long spiral tubes under the domeson a substrate of stone wool.

Weeds

Algae darken the surface of the domes and regu­larly need to be “weeded”.

Energy

The water pumps and venti­la­tors get their elec­tricity from solar instal­la­tions.

Light

At depths of between 5m and 10m, there’s still enough light for photo­syn­thesis for fruit and vegeta­bles.

Harvest

So far, toma­toes, straw­ber­ries, beans, lettuce, basil and orna­mental plants

Checks

Sensors control various para­me­ters such as the concen­tra­tion of CO₂ and oxygen as well as humidity and light inten­sity.

Irri­ga­tion

Sea water condenses on the domes and is desali­nated in the process. It is then used for irri­ga­tion.
